Odisha’s cultural ambassador, Sudarsan Pattnaik, has etched his name in history by winning the inaugural British Sand Master Award, “The Fred Darrington,” at the Sandworld 2025 International Sand Art Festival in Weymouth, United Kingdom. Conferred on April 05, 2025, during the festival’s opening, this accolade celebrates Pattnaik’s mastery while marking the centenary of Fred Darrington.
Lord Ganesha’s Message of Peace
At the festival in Weymouth, dubbed the cradle of British sand art, Pattnaik unveiled a striking 10-foot-high sand sculpture of Lord Ganesha, infused with the theme “World Peace.” This creation clinched the prestigious award, presented by Weymouth Mayor Jon Orell. Dignitaries including Mark Andersen, Sandworld Director; David Hicks, its Co-founder; and Naorem J Singh, Culture Minister at India’s High Commission in London, witnessed the ceremony.

Pattnaik expressed his pride, stating, “I am honoured to be the first Indian to receive the ‘Fred Darrington’ British Sand Master Award at Sandworld 2025. This recognition celebrates my Lord Ganesha sculpture, a symbol of universal peace.” His work seamlessly blends artistry with meaning.
