18th National Chess Championship for the Visually Challenged, a remarkable event organized with the All-India Chess Federation for the Blind (AICFB). Fifty-four skilled players from 15 states and Union Territories, including 52 men and 2 women, gathered to compete in a challenging nine-round format, set to conclude on April 6.
Odisha has selected four talented contenders namely Soundarya Kumar Pradhan, Subhendu Kumar Patra, Prachurya Kumar Pradhan, and Deepak Kumar Bhoi for this championship. The winners will earn the chance to compete internationally in Serbia and Poland.
Driving Force behind 18th National Chess Championship

The opening ceremony began with a stirring performance by the SAIoneers Choir and the lighting of the lamp. B.K. Swain, Secretary of Odisha’s Sports & Youth Services Department and Guest of Honour, spoke passionately about inclusion. “This initiative reflects Odisha’s commitment to making sports accessible to all,” he said. “It nurtures talent and shows that determination transcends boundaries. The government stands firm in supporting equal opportunities in sports.”

“This event underscores our dedication to creating spaces where everyone can excel,” Dr. Silpi Sahoo, Chairperson of SAI International Education Group and Chief Guest stated. To the players, she added, “You inspire us all. Your strategic brilliance and passion redefine resilience. Every move you make builds a stronger future.” The ceremony also featured Sanyasi Behera, Odisha’s first visually impaired OAS officer, alongside AICFB Vice-President Kishan Gangolli and Treasurer Swapnil Shah.
Who All are Odisha’s Pride on the Board?

Soundarya Kumar Pradhan, an Asian Para Games gold medallist and one of Odisha’s participants, delivered a rousing speech that energized the players. His journey from local talent to international acclaim mirrors the potential of his fellow competitors. Odisha’s quartet brings a sense of homegrown pride to the national stage.
The event’s reach extended beyond the players, with students from PM Shri Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Mundali, PM Shri KV No. 3 Mundali, and Godisahi High School in attendance.
