The Sundargarh district administration has proposed an investment of ₹58.87 crore with an aim to develop 27 identified tourist sites. This initiative, detailed in a letter sent by Sundargarh Collector Manoj Satyawan Mahajan to the Odisha Tourism Department on March 13, seeks approval and funding to kickstart Phase-I of the projects.
A District-Wide Development Plan
The proposed projects span across Sundargarh’s diverse blocks. Bonai and Lahunipada blocks lead with five projects each, followed by Balishankara with three. Rourkela city, Sundargarh town, and Rajgangpur will each see two projects, while blocks like Lathikata, Bisra, Sundargarh Sadar, Tangarpali, Hemgir, Koida, Lefripada, and Gurundia are slated for one project each.
What are Some of The Proposed Major Projects?
Among the standout initiatives by Sundargarh to develop tourist sites is the development of TISCO Pond in Rourkela, the largest project in Phase-I with a budget of ₹20.92 crore. Once an abandoned quarry pit, this water-filled site near Panposh Sports Hostel offers scenic views and ample space for recreation. The Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) will oversee the construction of roads, pedestrian pathways, kiosks, a deck area, compound walls, landscaping, electrification, and drainage systems.

Another key project is the enhancement of Durgapur Hill in Rourkela, earmarked for day tourism with ₹2.17 crore. Similarly, Akshayshila in Bisra block and Deodhar in Lahunipada are proposed for eco-tourism development, capitalizing on their natural charm.
How will this Development Plan Revive Water Bodies of Sundargarh?

Water bodies feature prominently in the plan, with Kendudihi Katta in Bonai block set for a ₹9.49 crore upgrade. This project aims to enhance the area’s appeal as a serene getaway. Likewise, dams such as Talsara in Balishankara (₹2.30 crore, managed by Odisha Lift Irrigation Corporation) and Rukura, Kansbahal, and Pitamahal in Gurundia, Rajgangpur, and Lathikata blocks, respectively, will be developed under the Rourkela Irrigation Division.
Cultural heritage also finds a place in the blueprint. The Baba Baneswar temple in Bonai, a site of spiritual significance, will receive ₹2.04 crore for infrastructure improvements. Meanwhile, the Kanakunda canyon in Balishankara, with its striking natural beauty, is slated for a ₹2.28 crore facelift to improve its tourism potential.
Plans to Put Rourkela on Odisha’s Tourist Map
The plan extends to lesser-known sites with unique appeal. The Junagarh cave in Hemgir, under the Sundargarh Forest Division’s care, will be developed for ₹1.31 crore. Together, these initiatives aim to create a network of attractions that cater to diverse interests including adventure, relaxation, or cultural exploration.
The ₹58.87 crore proposal is more than an infrastructure push/ By creating recreational spaces and improving access to tourist sites, the administration hopes to generate employment, support local businesses, and put Sundargarh on Odisha’s tourism map. The emphasis on eco-tourism and sustainable development also ensures that the district’s natural and cultural assets are preserved. As the Tourism Department reviews the detailed project reports and cost estimates submitted by Collector Mahajan, anticipation builds among residents and stakeholders.
