The Odisha government has planned the construction of a state-of-the-art mega convention centre in Bhubaneswar’s Chandrasekharpur. Boasting a seating capacity of 10,000, this mega facility will be the largest in the city, designed to host international conferences, exhibitions, and events. This is set to be developed on an 18-acre site adjacent to Rail Sadan, the headquarters of East Coast Railway.
Location for Bhubaneswar’s Mega Convention Centre
Located near the bustling Jaydev Vihar-Nandankanan Road, the convention centre promises seamless connectivity for visitors. The chosen site, currently occupied by the OMFED plant, offers easy access to major parts of the city. Its proximity to key landmarks like Rail Sadan ensures convenience for both local and international attendees. Visitors can reach the venue via NH-16 or city roads, with ample public transport options, including buses and auto-rickshaws, available from Biju Patnaik International Airport (7 km away) and Bhubaneswar Railway Station (10 km away).
Project Execution and Timeline
The Odisha Bridge Construction Corporation (OBCC) Ltd is spearheading the project under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Fully funded by private investors, the initiative has gained momentum with the recent issuance of a Request for Proposal (RFP) to appoint a transaction advisor. “We issued the RFP for selecting a transaction advisor for the convention centre. The advisor will prepare the project report, following which the final tender will be floated,” said Sameer Hota, Managing Director of OBCC.
Planned Facilities of the Convention
The convention centre is envisioned as a versatile venue, equipped to host a range of events, from corporate summits to cultural festivals. Key features include a 4,000-seat plenary hall, a 1,200-seat meeting hall, a 500-seat secondary hall, and four 100-seat conference rooms for smaller gatherings. The facility will also offer a 50,000 sq ft indoor exhibition hall and an outdoor exhibition space capable of accommodating 30,000 visitors. Additional amenities include climate-controlled interiors, advanced security systems, ample parking, an internal road network, and landscaped public areas.
How will this Convention Centre Boost Bhubaneswar’s Global Profile?
Bhubaneswar has already earned recognition as a host for high-profile events like the G20 meetings and Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. The new convention centre will further solidify its reputation as a premier destination for national and international conventions. “This is really a great plan. Bhubaneswar can host mega international events, and such a centre is the need of the hour,” said Birendra Mohanty, a resident of Acharya Vihar. By fostering economic and cultural growth, the facility is expected to attract global businesses, tourists, and event organizers.
Event Registration and Activities at Bhubaneswar’s Convention Centre
While specific events for the convention centre are yet to be announced, it is poised to host a diverse array of activities, including trade shows, tech expos, academic conferences, and cultural performances. Once operational, event registration will likely be managed through an official website or dedicated ticketing platforms, with details shared closer to the centre’s inauguration. Organizers are expected to provide online portals for seamless booking, ensuring accessibility for attendees worldwide.
