The Bhubaneswar Metro project is one of the crucial transit systems structured by the Odisha Government. It aims to deliver a safer, faster, and eco-friendly transportation system. The Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project is the transformative initiative taken by the Odisha government to modernise urban transport. Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation is owned by the state government as a subsidiary. To get the recent updates on this project, read this blog.
The aim of initiating the Bhubaneswar Metro project
The Bhubaneswar Metro Project is designed to combat traffic congestion & enhance connectivity. This metro system promises a significant enhancement in Public transportation across Bhubaneswar. The BMRP will see metro trains operating on the elevated tracks, positioned approx. 13 metres above ground level. The most prominent areas of Bhubaneswar, like Jayadev, Rajmahal & Baranga, feature the highest elevated tracks, ensuring seamless integration with the infrastructure of Bhubaneswar.
Based on the project plans, metro trains will be available every 10 minutes to accommodate the commuters. This project is designed to ease the daily commute problems and encourage people to shift towards public transport. The timeline of completion date is December 2027. This project aims to deliver a high-frequency, reliable transportation service. Furthermore, it will transform Bhubaneswar into a commuter-friendly & effectively connected city, giving benefits to both the visitors & residents.
The brief designing of the Bhubaneswar Metro project
As per the updated information, the metro fleet will contain 13 trains, each having 3 coaches. The coaches will be designed in such a way that it is capable of transporting a significant amount of passengers with effectiveness & frequency. The groundwork for this project is progressing with the soil testing across multiple strategic locations. The soil is already collected by extracting 50 to 60 metres of depth and then sent for testing to laboratories in Cuttack & Delhi. This is the most necessary procedure to guarantee the stability & safety of elevated tracks.
Based on the laboratory specialists, the soil testing phase is expected to be completed in the next 2 months. After the soil testing, this project will push forward to the design phase. Furthermore, the manufacturing work is being done at the casting yard in Ghatikia, Bhubaneswar. To track these ongoing procedures & future requirements, a dedicated project depo is being developed near Trisulia, Ratangada.
In collaboration with the Metro rail project, the road extension work is also going from Sishu Bhawan Square to Raghunathpur. This initiative has been taken to accommodate the increase in traffic flow and ease congestion during construction work. After the road extension within 2 months, the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project starts. Furthermore, this project will mark a significant milestone in Odisha’s infrastructure development.
The Metro will transport from Bhubaneswar Airport to Trisulia Square in Phase 1. The 26 km rail line project has an estimated cost of INR 6,256 Crore. The metro will have elevated corridors and comprise 20 stations. The former Chief Minister of Odisha, Mr Naveen Patnaik, laid the foundation of this project on January 1, 2024, at Trisualia. Currently, this project is in the contractor tendering process, with bids at the technical evaluation stage.
