The Tara Tarini Temple, nestled in the serene hills of Purushottampur in Ganjam district, stands as one of Odisha’s most revered spiritual landmarks. This ancient shrine, dedicated to Maa Tara Tarini, attracts thousands of devotees annually. The Odisha government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, has sanctioned ₹68 crore for its comprehensive development. This ambitious initiative aims to enhance infrastructure, improve visitor facilities, and ensure the temple’s long-term preservation.
Infrastructure Development at Tara Tarini Temple

During a recent visit to Ganjam district, Chief Minister Majhi announced an initial allocation of ₹8 crore for critical infrastructure upgrades at the Tara Tarini Peeth. This funding will support essential improvements, including enhanced security and sanitation measures, the installation of an automated cooking machine on the hilltop to facilitate prasad preparation, and the repair and reconstruction of the iconic 999 stone steps leading to the temple. Additionally, provisions for land acquisition will enable the creation of a parking area and a helipad.
How will the Devotee Experience Improve?

The state government has allocated an additional ₹30 crore for transformative projects such as the construction of a multi-storey dharamshala near the main entrance. The plan also includes developing a picnic spot, improving road connectivity with safety walls, lighting, and signboards, and constructing five domes around the temple. The northern side of the temple will see significant upgrades, while development works along the Rushikulya River, estimated at ₹25 crore. These initiatives aim to make Tara Tarini Peeth not only a place of worship but also a holistic destination.

Ensuring Long-Term Sustainability for Tara Tarini Temple

A notable aspect of the government’s plan is the allocation of ₹5 crore as a fixed deposit for the maintenance of the temple and its associated infrastructure. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the facilities remain well-maintained, preserving the sanctity and functionality of the site for future generations.
The announcement came during Chief Minister Majhi’s visit to Ganjam, where he also participated in the centenary celebrations of Gangadahani Government Upgraded High School in Khallikote. Addressing students and local representatives, he emphasized the role of education and heritage in shaping a progressive society.
His visit to the Tara Tarini Peeth included a review meeting with the district administration. The event saw the presence of key dignitaries, including Minister of Commerce & Transport Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, Minister of Fisheries & Animal Resources Development Gokulananda Mallik, and local MLAs. The ₹68 crore investment in Tara Tarini Peeth marks a significant milestone by addressing immediate infrastructure needs, enhancing visitor amenities, and ensuring long-term maintenance.
