World Press Freedom Day is observed annually on May 3 in Odisha. It is a global tribute to the principles of press freedom, journalistic integrity, and the vital role of a free media in fostering democracy. Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, following the UNESCO-endorsed Windhoek Declaration of 1991, this day honors journalists who risk their lives to uphold truth and protect media independence. In 2025, the theme “Press for the Planet” emphasizes journalism’s role in addressing environmental crises, promoting sustainability, and raising awareness about climate challenges.
Odisha’s Tribute to World Press Freedom in 2025
In Bhubaneswar, World Press Day 2025 was marked by a significant event organized by the Bhubaneswar Journalists Association at Jayadev Bhavan, Odisha. A two-day state-level photo exhibition, inaugurated by senior BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan, captured the spirit of the global theme, “Press for the Planet.” The exhibition showcased compelling photographs that conveyed powerful messages about environmental awareness, press freedom, and the media’s role in advocating for a sustainable future. Through evocative imagery, the event highlighted how journalism can inspire action to protect the planet while safeguarding the right to free expression. The photo exhibition at Jayadev Bhavan served as a creative platform to merge environmental advocacy with the defense of press freedom, inspiring both journalists and citizens.

A standout moment of the exhibition was the recognition of Surendra Kumar Behera (Bulu) from Baliguda in Kandhamal district. Behera’s four out of five submitted photographs earned him certificates and trophies, making him the only participant from Kandhamal to be honoured. His achievement brought pride to the district, with widespread congratulations.

Press Freedom Day Observance in Odisha

The State has a rich history of commemorating World Press Freedom Day in Odisha with events that reinforce the media’s role in society. In recent years, the state has hosted seminars, workshops, and discussions organized by media bodies, educational institutions, and civil society groups. For instance, in 2024, media organizations in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack held sessions focusing on the challenges of digital journalism and the importance of combating misinformation. These events often feature dialogues on protecting journalists from harassment and ensuring a safe environment for reporting, especially on sensitive issues like corruption and governance.
The state government, through the Information and Public Relations Department, has also played a key role in past celebrations. In 2023, Odisha’s then-Governor Raghubar Das emphasized the media’s responsibility in nation-building during a National Press Day event in Bhubaneswar, urging journalists to uphold ethical standards. Such initiatives reflect Odisha’s recognition of the press as a cornerstone of democracy. In 2025, prominent figures like Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reaffirmed the state’s resolve to promote ethical journalism and safeguard press rights.
