Among Odisha’s many celebrated events, the Toshali National Crafts Mela Odisha 2025 stands out as a heartfelt tribute to the state’s artisans and their timeless craftsmanship. As we move ahead together, this annual gathering not only preserves our legacy but also connects it to a modern audience. The 19th edition of this grand mela is set to take place from March 19 to March 31, 2025, at Janata Maidan, Bhubaneswar, welcoming visitors daily from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
The History of Toshali Mela

The Toshali National Crafts Mela began as a visionary initiative by the Government of Odisha’s Handlooms, Textiles, and Handicrafts Department, with the State Institute for Development of Arts and Crafts (SIDAC) at its helm. Launched to provide a platform for artisans to showcase their skills, the mela has grown over the years into one of Eastern India’s most cherished cultural events. Named after the ancient city of Toshali in Odisha, it reflects a deep respect for our historical roots while embracing the diversity of India’s craft traditions. From its modest beginnings, it has welcomed lakhs of visitors and generated crores in revenue, empowering artisans and strengthening their economic standing.
What are the Activities to Enjoy in Toshali Mela

The Toshali National Crafts Mela Odisha 2025 is not just about shopping but an experience that engages all senses. Cultural programmes, held every evening, feature classical and folk dances, music, and performances by renowned artists from Odisha and beyond. A food court with 25-30 stalls offers a taste of traditional Odia cuisine alongside multi-cuisine delights, making it a treat for food lovers. The Theme Pavilion, a highlight each year, will focus on a special aspect of craftsmanship in 2025, providing an educational glimpse into the art.
Odisha’s Handloom Tradition in Toshali Mela

At the heart of the Toshali Mela lies Odisha’s celebrated handloom heritage. The state’s weavers have long been masters of their craft, creating textiles that tell stories of skill and patience. The mela offers a front-row seat to this legacy, where visitors can witness the intricate process behind each piece. From the rhythmic clack of looms to the vibrant threads that form stunning patterns, the event honours the hands that keep this tradition alive.
Famous Handloom Styles: A Feast for the Eyes

The mela brings together some of Odisha’s most iconic handloom styles, each with its own charm. The Sambalpuri Ikat, known for its bold tie-dye patterns, reflects the region’s artistic flair. The Khandua from Cuttack and Nuapatna, once woven for Lord Jagannath, carries a sacred elegance. Meanwhile, the silk Patta from Berhampur dazzles with its sheen and durability. These textiles, alongside works from artisans across India, showcase a stunning variety that appeals to every taste.
Treasures of Talent in Artefacts and Handicrafts

Beyond textiles, the Toshali Mela is a treasure trove of handicrafts. Over 300 stalls will display an array of artefacts, from Odisha’s golden grass mats and palm leaf engravings to terracotta figures and stone sculptures. National artisans join their Odia counterparts, offering everything from jewellery to home décor. These creations embody the spirit of their makers, blending tradition with innovation. Visitors can purchase these unique pieces, knowing they’re supporting the livelihoods of skilled craftspeople.
Toshal Mela Supporting Local Artisans
The mela’s true essence lies in its commitment to Odisha’s artisans. By offering a direct platform to sell their work, it eliminates middlemen, ensuring fair earnings for weavers and craftspeople. Last year’s event saw a footfall of nearly 20 lakh and business worth Rs 20 crore, numbers that reflect its impact.
