Bhubaneswar is gearing up to host the National Para Fencing Championship 2025, a prestigious event that positions the city as a rising star in India’s sports landscape. Scheduled from March 28 to 31, 2025, this championship will bring together the country’s top para fencers, showcasing their skill, agility, and determination.
The Organising Force Behind the Event
The championship is being meticulously organised by the Para Sports Association of Odisha (PSAO) under the aegis of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), with vital support from the Sports and Youth Services Department, Government of Odisha. This collaboration ensures a well-executed event that meets national standards. Kamala Kanta Rath, President of PSAO, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to host the National Para Fencing Championship in Bhubaneswar. This event will not only highlight the exceptional talents of our para-athletes but also underline Odisha’s strong commitment to sports development. We aim to create an inspiring atmosphere for these remarkable athletes.” Sunil Pradhan, Secretary of PSAO and Treasurer of PCI, added, “Para fencing demands exceptional skill and determination. This championship is a step towards promoting inclusivity in sports and providing para-athletes with the platform they deserve.”
Understanding Para Fencing: A Sport of Skill and Spirit

Para fencing, an adapted version of traditional fencing, is tailored for athletes with physical disabilities. It requires precision, agility, and mental focus, with participants using lightweight swords (foil, épée, or sabre) to score points within a defined rule set. A distinctive feature is the use of wheelchairs, secured to the floor during bouts, enabling athletes to concentrate fully on their technique and strategy. The 2025 championship will see top para fencers from across India vying for honours, making it one of the most significant para-sporting events of the year.
A Grand Stage at Iconic Venues

The National Para Fencing Championship 2025 will feature an impressive lineup, with over 200 para-athletes from more than 25 states and 20 additional teams expected to compete for top honours.
The event will unfold at two prominent venues: the Biju Patnaik Indoor Stadium in Niladri Vihar and the Kalinga Sports Complex near Nayapalli. These facilities, known for their modern infrastructure, are well-equipped to host this significant national event, accommodating athletes, officials, and spectators with ease.
The Biju Patnaik Indoor Stadium, located in Niladri Vihar, is approximately 7 kilometres from the Biju Patnaik International Airport, a 15-20 minute drive via NH-16. The Kalinga Sports Complex, near Nayapalli, is about 10 kilometres from the airport, reachable in 20-25 minutes along the same route. From Bhubaneswar Railway Station, the stadium is around 8 kilometres away (20 minutes by road), and the sports complex is roughly 10 kilometres (25 minutes).
